GIS Systems Engineer II

About the role
The Systems Engineer will be primarily responsible for ingesting, creating, and maintaining GIS data and other tabular files utilizing ESRI Enterprise Portal in conjunction with SQL databases. Other duties include conducting workflow analysis, creating custom Python and/or SQL scripts, and developing web applications. The Systems Engineer must be familiar with GIS capabilities and operations and its interaction within a stand‑alone IT environment.
Key responsibilities
- Implement, innovate, and own GIS infrastructure, including configuration and management of ESRI Enterprise GIS/Portal.
- Migrate legacy data to ESRI Enterprise GIS/Portal and ingest data from existing databases and flat files into SQL databases.
- Coordinate with IT, security, and software teams to ensure proper permissions, performance tuning, and system integration.
- Create custom GIS tools, automate workflows, and develop web‑based applications in an offline environment.
- Support database design reviews, index optimization, and recommend enhancements for robustness and throughput.
- Lead and mentor entry‑level contributors on project tasks and standards.
- Communicate issues to management and serve as the primary point of contact for GIS development.
- Travel approximately two weeks per year and work occasional after‑hours or weekend shifts as needed.
Required profile
- 2‑6 years of relevant experience with an associate’s degree in Information Science, GIS, Computer Science, or related field; or equivalent work experience.
- U.S. citizenship with ability to obtain and maintain a TS security clearance, pass a polygraph, and hold a Security+ certification.
- Proven ability to coordinate with IT, software, and security professionals.
- Experience supporting federal government programs is preferred.
Required skills
- ESRI Enterprise Portal, ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, and related GIS tools.
- SQL database administration and performance tuning.
- Python scripting for data processing and automation.
- JavaScript (including Maps SDK) and .NET for web‑based GIS applications.
- Experience with file databases, personal geodatabases, and geospatial metadata standards.
