Founding Software Engineer - Backend

About the role

hypercubic is building AI systems that can understand, reason about, and re‑architect large‑scale legacy applications. As a founding backend engineer you will work directly with the CTO to design, prototype, and productionize AI‑powered solutions that modernize critical enterprise software.

Key responsibilities

• Rapidly prototype new concepts and features to validate ideas before full implementation.
• Ship AI‑driven features end‑to‑end, from model interaction to user‑facing workflows.
• Establish early engineering standards for testing, reliability, and code quality.
• Translate ambiguous problem statements into concrete experiments, constraints, and working systems.
• Lead architecture decisions and set long‑term technical direction together with the CTO.
• Collaborate with a diverse group of subject‑matter experts and customers across banking, insurance, airlines, and other industries.

Required profile

• Deeply cares about the product and its impact.
• Comfortable operating in uncertainty and defining what to build before how.
• Experience building complex agentic or autonomous products.
• Systems‑thinking mindset, focusing on feedback loops rather than isolated features.
• Ability to move quickly on prototypes while maintaining enterprise‑grade quality.
• Strong bias for action and a track record of thriving in fast‑paced environments.

Required skills

• Test‑Driven Development (TDD) and property‑based testing.
• Experience with agentic or autonomous systems.
• Exposure to legacy mainframe environments, especially COBOL.
• Knowledge of compilers and program‑analysis techniques.
• Familiarity with high‑performance computing (HPC) concepts.
