Founding Engineer – AI Accounting Automation

About the role

We are looking for our first Founding Engineer to own and expand the core machine‑learning engine that powers Abacus, an AI‑driven platform automating accounting workflows. You will report directly to the co‑founders and work on‑site in our San Francisco office, shaping product and technical direction from day one.

Key responsibilities

• Lead development of the ML‑powered document extraction engine.
• Design and implement backend systems with performance and scalability in mind.
• Build and ship new automation features for tax and accounting firms.
• Collaborate closely with the founders on product strategy and user needs.
• Help define engineering culture, technical roadmap, and future hiring standards.

Required profile

• 1–5 years of professional experience, preferably in high‑ownership or early‑stage environments.
• Strong backend development background, especially in Python.
• Demonstrated ability to take projects from 0 to 1 (side projects, startup experience, or similar).
• Willingness to work full‑time on‑site in San Francisco (5 days/week).
• Readiness to complete a technical take‑home exercise as part of the interview process.
