Founding Backend Engineer

About the role

Phaselaw is rebuilding the legacy eDiscovery industry with a modern, AI‑powered platform for in‑house legal teams. As a Founding Backend Engineer you will join the core engineering team to design, build, and scale the services that power document production, data ingestion, and AI features.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement backend services using Python, ensuring high performance and reliability.
• Develop and maintain data stores in PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch.
• Build and operate infrastructure with Terraform, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Collaborate with founders and product teams to ship features quickly and iterate based on feedback.
• Identify bottlenecks, improve system scalability, and contribute to architectural decisions.

Required profile

• 3+ years of professional backend development experience, preferably in fast‑moving startup environments.
• Strong product sense and a bias for action – you ship fast and own outcomes.
• Excellent problem‑solving skills and ability to work independently with extreme ownership.
