Job description

About the role

The Manulife Forest Management (MFM) Lake States & Northeast Division manages timberland investments across five U.S. states, and after acquiring the New Hampshire timberlands will cover 707,000 acres. This position manages timberland assets in New Hampshire, focusing on northern hardwood forests, with some spruce-fir and mixed cover types, using both even-age and uneven-age silviculture. It works closely with the Area Manager on the same client portfolio of natural asset investments.

Key responsibilities

  • Maintain a service-oriented relationship with MIMT and MIMFM personnel and uphold client fiduciary obligations.
  • Follow stewardship policies to meet or exceed state BMPs for water quality, soils and invasive species, and third-party SFI/FSC certification standards.
  • Oversee safety procedures for area personnel, contractors and property assets.
  • Help direct and oversee area operations, including planning, budgeting, GIS updates and quarterly property reports.
  • Administer harvesting operations: harvest planning, field inspection, timber cruising, merchandising, scheduling, bid analysis, contracting, security and inspections.
  • Assist in marketing wood products, exploring new markets and maintaining market communications.
  • Oversee road building and maintenance, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local laws and conservation easements.
  • Help create the Annual Operating Plan, year-end reporting, and attend conservation easement stakeholder meetings.
  • Manage harvest volumes and silvicultural prescriptions while keeping conservation easement and carbon project compliance.
  • Resolve trespass, encroachment and environmental issues with the appropriate authorities, and oversee recreational trail use agreements.
  • Use and oversee consultants, seek non-timber income, and help manage wood flow and delivery agreements.
  • Report operational status, markets, stewardship, risks and fire activity weekly, monthly and quarterly to the Area Manager, and lead property tours for clients and stakeholders.

Required profile

  • Bachelor's degree in forestry or equivalent experience.
  • At least 1 year of career experience; organizational and team supervision experience desirable.
  • Proficiency in northern hardwood, spruce, fir and mixed cover type forest management, including cost and return expectations, discounted cash flow analysis, harvest administration and timber marketing.
  • Knowledge of forest stewardship, safety concepts for timberland operations, and employee, client, community and industry relations.
  • Proficiency in timberland accounting, inventory/GIS systems and general forestry operations.

What we offer

  • Expected salary range of $48,975 to $81,625 USD, with incentive compensation tied to performance.
  • Benefits including health, dental, mental health, vision, disability, life and AD&D insurance, retirement savings plans and paid time off.
  • Flexible, inclusive work environment with learning and growth opportunities.
