Fitness Instructor

About the role

The Fire Department of New York City is seeking a full‑time Fitness Instructor to join its Bureau of Health Services/Medical Affairs. Reporting to the Chief of Training, the incumbent will create, deliver, and oversee fitness programs that support the health and safety of department personnel.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, and monitor individualized and group fitness programs.
• Conduct fitness assessments and prescribe tailored exercise plans.
• Perform periodic re‑evaluations to track progress and adjust programs.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety standards during all activities.
• Collaborate with medical staff to integrate fitness initiatives with overall health services.

Required profile

• Permanent civil‑service status or placement on the civil‑service list for Exam No. 5073.
• Baccalaureate degree in nutrition, exercise physiology, health & fitness, physical education, or a related field + 4 years relevant experience (including 1 year teaching exercise techniques), OR an Associate degree + 6 years relevant experience (including 1 year teaching exercise techniques).
• Certification in First Aid and CPR issued by the American Red Cross or an equivalent recognized organization.
