Fire & Fuels Mentor

About the role

The Fire & Fuels Mentor provides mentorship and hands‑on training to TERA’s intertribal stewardship crew and Lake Cal‑TREX participants. Working on a flexible, on‑call schedule, the mentor focuses on fuels‑reduction treatments, burn unit preparation, and burn operations.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver mentorship and practical training on fuels reduction, burn unit set‑up, and wildfire operations.
• Lead and supervise burn crews during Lake Cal‑TREX training camps and seasonal burns.
• Conduct NWCG Basic Firefighter/Firelighter (FFT2) and Wildland Fire Refresher (RT‑130) trainings.
• Support on‑call EcoCultural Fire Crew activities across Lake County.
• Collaborate with tribal partners, agencies, and community organizations to ensure safe, culturally‑relevant fire practices.

Required profile

• NWCG‑qualified personnel (FFT1+), with proven wildland fire experience.
• Ability to mentor and train crew members in field settings.
• Flexible availability for on‑call and seasonal work.
• Commitment to Indigenous‑led land stewardship and eco‑cultural fire principles.

Required skills

• NWCG FFT1 certification.
• NWCG FFT2 certification.
• RT‑130 (Wildland Fire Refresher) certification.
• Proficiency in fuels‑reduction techniques and burn unit preparation.
• Experience leading wildland fire operations.
