Finance and Budget Officer (Temporary)

About the role

The Finance and Budget Officer is based in the Field Operations Finance Division (FOFD) of the Office of Programme Planning, Finance and Budget (OPPFB) within the Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC). Reporting to the Section Chief, the officer supports the Controller in managing the financial resources allocated by Member States for peace operations, which exceed US$6 billion annually.

Key responsibilities

• Review and analyse data to finalise cost estimates and budget proposals for staff and non‑staff requirements across headquarters and field operations.
• Prepare budgets for medium‑sized peacekeeping missions and back‑stopping activities.
• Support managers in developing resource requirements for budget submissions.
• Provide input on programme budget implications for Security Council statements and assist intergovernmental bodies in budget review and approval processes.
• Issue allotments and appropriations, including fund redeployments, and monitor budget implementation.
• Recommend reallocation of funds as needed and ensure expenditures stay within authorized limits.
• Prepare documentation for budget performance submissions and analyse variances between approved budgets and actual spending.
• Draft official correspondence, background papers and briefings for senior management.
• Conduct research and prepare communications to member states on financial matters.
