About the role

As a Field Service Engineer (Customer Engineer) at Applied Materials, you will serve as the direct liaison with customers, installing, maintaining and upgrading advanced semiconductor and display equipment while leveraging digital analytics for troubleshooting.

Key responsibilities

  • Act as technical authority for CVD equipment hardware and process performance, leading troubleshooting of complex failures such as mass flow controller, vacuum pump, heater, and gas delivery issues.
  • Perform deep root‑cause analysis for repeat failures, defect excursions, and film non‑uniformity, and drive closure of critical tool issues.
  • Maintain hands‑on expertise in CVD process fundamentals, support and optimise CVD platforms from AMAT, ASM or LAM, and partner with process engineering to debug defects and yield loss.
  • Allocate engineering resources, own machine availability and performance metrics, and balance corrective, preventive and improvement activities to meet fab production demand.
  • Coach and mentor junior engineers and technicians, establish best practices for diagnostics and equipment recovery, and provide technical guidance during high‑pressure events.
  • Lead continuous‑improvement projects focused on hardware reliability, uptime and cost reduction, driving data collection, failure trend analysis and reporting.
  • Translate technical field issues into clear communication for business units, interface with equipment vendors, and convey risks and priorities to fab leadership.

Required profile

  • Minimum 5+ years semiconductor industry experience in field service, process or fab engineering.
  • Strong hands‑on experience supporting CVD equipment in a high‑volume production fab.
  • Proven expertise in CVD hardware, process interactions, defectivity and uniformity troubleshooting.
  • Direct experience with AMAT, ASM or LAM CVD tools and solid understanding of vacuum, gas delivery, thermal control and safety systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering; Master’s preferred.
