Field Operations and Data Modernization Specialist

About the role

The Field Operations and Data Modernization Specialist will lead at‑sea and estuarine data collection for long‑term marine surveys while transforming how that data is captured, processed, and delivered. Based in Seattle, the role supports NOAA Fisheries and the Northwest Fisheries Science Center, ensuring continuity of multi‑decade survey series as they transition to digital, automated workflows.

Key responsibilities

• Direct field collection of biological and environmental data using digital platforms such as electronic measuring boards and rugged tablets.
• Develop and enforce eDNA sampling protocols, manage sample preservation, chain‑of‑custody, and coordinate with omics laboratories.
• Design and implement automated data pipelines that transfer data from ship to shore and generate rapid preliminary products, cruise summaries, and visualizations.
• Maintain and improve project databases, standardizing historic and new datasets for interdisciplinary access.
• Oversee logistics and asset management, including mobilization, demobilization, and inventory tracking of equipment.
• Produce technical reports and contribute to scientific manuscripts communicating methodological advances and field results.

Required profile

• Experience in marine or estuarine field data collection and environmental sampling.
• Strong understanding of data workflow automation and database maintenance.
• Ability to work safely in offshore environments and manage complex logistics.
