Fiber Optic Specialist – First Shift

About the role

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Fiber Optic Specialist for the first shift to support R&D and production of the SPARC fusion machine. The role involves handling, splicing, testing, and integrating thousands of optical fibers while ensuring minimal loss and high reliability.

Key responsibilities

• Handle, route, splice, test, and repair thousands of fibers throughout the SPARC fusion machine.
• Mechanically integrate small assemblies such as passthrough flanges and enclosures adjacent to fiber work.
• Install composite or polymer wrappings for fibers and their enclosures.
• Train other technicians on installation, splicing, routing, and measurement procedures.
• Improve safety protocols for laser and fiber optic handling and support both manufacturing and R&D fiber needs.

Required profile

• Minimum 4 years of experience in fiber optics field applications, with hands‑on lab handling and measurement.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lb, work in confined spaces, and operate at heights around 25 ft.
• Willingness to travel and work occasional nights, weekends, or on‑call shifts.
• Commitment to safety in environments with heat, cold, noise, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics.

Required skills

• Fiber coating removal and re‑coating.
• Specialty fiber splicing and proof‑testing.
• Operation of OTDR, OSA, OBR, power meters, interrogators, optical multiplexers, optical switches, and fault locators.
• Experience with distributed sensing arrays and polyimide‑coated fibers.
• Design, build, and test fiber cable assemblies for cryogenic and vacuum conditions.
