Ferryboat Operator – Engine Room & Vessel Pilot

About the role

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development seeks qualified professionals to operate and pilot state‑owned inspected ferry vessels on the Mississippi River and Calcasieu Ship Channel. The incumbent will manage engine‑room machinery, ensure safe vessel operation, and support passenger and vehicle transport.

Key responsibilities

• Operate and maintain engine‑room equipment, including diesel propulsion, electrical generators, hydraulic and sanitation systems.
• Maintain vigilant watch from the engineer control station while underway.
• Pilot ferries carrying vehicles and passengers, performing daily system checks and emergency drills.
• Conduct fire, collision, and security drills; serve as Vessel Security Officer.
• Communicate with U.S. Coast Guard inspectors, maintain engineering logs, and schedule lubrication and equipment maintenance.

Required profile

• Minimum two years of marine operations experience.
• Valid U.S. Coast Guard credentials: Able‑Bodied Seaman (AB) or Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED).
• Possession of a current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) at appointment.
• Ability to comply with Louisiana civil service rules and DOTD policies.

Required skills

• Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with Designated Duty Engineer endorsement for motor vessels <1,000 HP.
• Able‑Bodied Seaman (AB) certification.
• Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED) certification.
• Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
