FBI Special Agent – Legal Background

About the role

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is seeking candidates with a law or legal background to join as Special Agents. This position blends legal research expertise with intensive investigative work to protect the nation from cyber‑attacks, terrorism, fraud and other threats.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and conduct investigations of potential violations of federal laws, cybersecurity incidents, and public‑safety matters.
• Exercise judgment, resourcefulness, and versatility to meet investigative demands.
• Develop and maintain liaison relationships with federal, state, local, tribal, territorial and international law‑enforcement agencies.
• Maintain a level of physical fitness required for law‑enforcement duties.

Required profile

• U.S. citizenship.
• Ability to obtain a Top Secret Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance.
• Willingness to travel as required.
• Meet the FBI’s Employment Eligibility requirements.
• Bachelor’s degree or J.D. from a U.S. accredited institution, preferably in law or a related field.
