Facilities HVAC Operator

About the role

The Facilities department is seeking an HVAC Operator to join the team at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. Reporting to the Facilities Plant Operations Supervisor, you will ensure reliable operation, monitoring, repair, and maintenance of HVAC, fire‑protection, and plumbing systems across the campus. The position requires flexibility to work rotating weekends.

Key responsibilities

• Perform scheduled inspections, testing, and monitoring of HVAC, fire‑protection, and plumbing equipment.
• Identify and implement corrective actions and repairs to resolve operational irregularities.
• Execute preventive and urgent maintenance tasks promptly to keep equipment running efficiently.
• Maintain and review logs for boilers and chillers, verifying that all pressure‑vessel inspections are completed.
• Assist other departments and trades (e.g., cash department, carpenters, mechanics, electricians) as needed.

Required profile

• 3‑5+ years of relevant HVAC experience for intermediate level or 5‑9+ years for senior level.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Journeyman‑type certification preferred (e.g., CFC certification, EPA license).
• Willingness to work rotating weekends.

Required skills

• Operation and maintenance of commercial HVAC, fire‑protection, and plumbing systems.
• Knowledge of centrifugal chillers, centrifugal pumps, chemical water treatment, refrigeration systems, direct digital control (DDC) systems, and gas fire‑tube boilers.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, HVAC schematics, DDC, electrical, pneumatic, and control diagrams.
• Fundamental understanding of electrical principles and troubleshooting of electrical/electronic controls.
