External Communications Associate

About the role

The External Communications Associate joins Macy’s to help shape and share the company’s story across the nation. Working either on operations‑focused or brand‑focused initiatives, the associate partners with internal teams to manage media relations, storytelling, and reputation management.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute integrated communication strategies for partnerships, product launches, market expansions, and major events.
• Build and maintain relationships with national and regional media outlets, pitching stories and securing earned coverage.
• Create, edit, and distribute press releases, media advisories, key messages, and other media assets.
• Support crisis communications and help de‑escalate issues that could impact the brand.
• Collaborate with executives, brand leaders, civic partners, and nonprofit organizations to align messaging.
• Provide media training and strategic counsel to spokespeople.

Required profile

• Strong written and verbal communication skills with a storytelling mindset.
• Ability to navigate fast‑moving, complex communication challenges.
• Experience working with cross‑functional teams and external media contacts.
• Interest in retail, brand, or operational communications.
