Extension Agent – Horticulture (Assistant to Full)

About the role

The Extension Agent, Ag‑Hort will lead horticulture programming for Dare County, delivering research‑based, non‑formal education to both consumer and commercial audiences. This position offers a dynamic work environment where you engage directly with community members to address plant health, pest issues, and gardening opportunities.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, implement, and evaluate outcome‑based horticulture programs tailored to local needs.
• Develop and work with stakeholder committees to guide program direction.
• Collaborate with community organizations to connect Extension resources with clients.
• Recruit, train, and manage volunteers and staff for program delivery.
• Identify plants, diagnose pest problems, and provide practical solutions.

Required profile

• Demonstrated technical competence in consumer and commercial horticulture.
• Experience delivering non‑formal education and outreach.
• Strong ability to build relationships with diverse community partners.
• Effective communication skills for both individual clients and group settings.
