About the role
The New York Times seeks an Executive Director to lead Newsroom Safety and Security worldwide. Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Global Security, you will shape and execute strategies that protect journalists and newsroom staff from physical, digital, and psychological threats.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and enhance a security operational plan aligned with newsroom priorities and evolving threat landscapes.
- Serve as the primary security partner for newsroom mastheads and desk heads.
- Lead incident response protocols, coordinate rapid support, and manage resources during emergencies.
- Provide risk assessments, security planning, and logistical support for journalists in high‑risk environments.
- Design and deliver training curricula on physical and digital safety for newsroom personnel.
- Collaborate with cybersecurity, legal, communications, and other departments on preventive measures and incident planning.
Required profile
- Extensive understanding of newsgathering operations and the unique safety challenges journalists face.
- Proven experience in proactive risk mitigation, rapid incident response, and time‑sensitive communication.
- Strong cross‑functional collaboration skills, working with legal, cybersecurity, and editorial teams.
- Leadership experience managing security teams and external contractors.
