Excise Tax Examiner 4 (Internal)

About the role

The Washington State Department of Revenue is seeking an Excise Tax Examiner 4 to join the Taxpayer Account Administration (TAA) division. This internal position supports the Apportionment & Financial Institutions team, providing expert guidance on taxability issues and complex account adjustments.

Key responsibilities

• Provide interpretive guidance on taxability for assigned excise tax programs.
• Deliver expert‑level support for the Apportionment & Financial Institutions team’s duties.
• Participate in systems and process redesign initiatives.
• Collaborate with agency staff to revise Washington Administrative Codes (WACs) and related publications.
• Oversee procedures and training curriculum for the team.
• Conduct complex analysis and perform multi‑account tax adjustments.
• Execute Core ATLAS work items to review and adjust taxpayer accounts.

Required profile

• Demonstrated ability to conduct full‑scope financial examinations and comprehensive reviews of taxpayer accounts.
• Strong knowledge of excise tax programs, apportionment, and financial institution regulations.
• Experience interpreting tax statutes and drafting administrative guidance.
• Ability to work collaboratively across teams and communicate technical tax concepts clearly.
