Environmental Superintendent

About the role

The Environmental Superintendent will lead the environmental team at the Cortez Mine, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations, maintaining ISO 14001 certification, and managing state‑level permitting activities. This position is critical for delivering the mine’s environmental programs in line with corporate standards and regulatory expectations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, mentor and develop a team of environmental professionals to achieve compliance and secure necessary permits.
• Coordinate state‑level permitting strategies, prepare applications and manage interactions with regulatory agencies.
• Oversee environmental studies that support permitting and other initiatives.
• Manage and continuously improve the Environmental Management System (EMS) and maintain ISO 14001 certification.
• Maintain accurate records of communications with regulators and stakeholders.
• Serve as the primary liaison with environmental regulatory agencies.
• Develop, forecast and track budgets for environmental operations.
• Collaborate with supply‑chain teams to procure contractors and consultants.
• Lead investigations of major environmental incidents and track corrective actions.
• Provide training to employees and contractors on environmental obligations.
• Participate in on‑call after‑hours incident response as needed.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, environmental science, hydrology, mine engineering, ecology or a related discipline.
• At least 7 years of experience managing environmental compliance and permitting programs, with a minimum of 3 years in a supervisory role.
• Comprehensive knowledge of federal and state permitting processes, including NEPA.
• Strong verbal, written and presentation skills.

Required skills

• Proficiency with ISO 14001 environmental management system.
• Strong computer skills for record‑keeping, reporting and data analysis.
