Engineering Technician – R&D (Austin, TX)

About the role

Applied Materials is a global leader in materials engineering solutions that enable the production of advanced semiconductor and display chips. The Engineering Technician – R&D will perform machine testing and maintenance on Ion Implanters and RF Plasma Systems, working under direction from physicists and engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance and preventive tasks on semiconductor implant equipment to ensure optimal operation and minimize downtime.
• Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair equipment malfunctions using technical manuals, diagnostic tools, and knowledge of semiconductor processes.
• Collaborate with engineers and scientists to develop new equipment and optimize existing performance.
• Document all maintenance activities, repairs, and adjustments in logs and databases.
• Assist in setup and qualification of experimental semiconductor implant equipment.
• Participate in the site Emergency Response Team, maintaining training, certifications, and readiness for emergencies.

Required profile

• Associate degree or equivalent technical certification in electronics, electrical, automotive, robotics, or a related field.
• 5‑10 years of relevant experience with ion implanters and RF plasma systems.
• Strong problem‑solving ability, attention to detail, and capacity to work independently in a fast‑paced R&D environment.
• Willingness to follow strict safety protocols and work various shifts as needed.
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally on short notice.

Required skills

• Proficiency reading and interpreting technical manuals and schematics.
