EMC Engineering Intern (Summer 2027)

About the role

Impulse Space is looking for an EMC Engineering Intern for Summer 2027, a 12-week placement from May/June through August/September 2027. The intern supports electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) engineering workflows, working closely with RF, avionics, mechanical and software engineers to test, troubleshoot and report on the electromagnetic performance of products, including spacecraft components and system-level development.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute to the optimization of in-house EMC automation.
• Drive semi-anechoic chamber bringup and inter-chamber repeatability.
• Analyze and simulate spacecraft components and systems for phenomena such as radiated emissions, surface charging and performance in radiation.
• Run component-level and system-level EMC testing per MIL-STD 461 and MIL-STD 464.
• Drive test plans, test reports and troubleshooting with engineering groups across multiple satellite designs.
• Operate and integrate common EMC lab equipment such as spectrum analyzers, signal generators, RF amplifiers and oscilloscopes.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's program in Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related field.
• Understanding of circuit theory and EM fundamentals.
• Hands-on lab experience with RF test equipment.
• Ability to adapt to a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
• Willingness to work on-site in Redondo Beach, CA for the duration of the internship; overtime may be required and is paid.
• U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residency, protected individual status or eligibility for the required authorizations under ITAR.

Preferred skills and experience

• Radiated, conducted and transient testing knowledge.
• Python scripting.
• RF fundamentals such as antenna principles, link budgets, desense, S-parameters and transmission line theory.
• EMC design guidelines and best practices.
• Simulation tools such as EMC Plus, ADS, CST and HFSS.

Pay is $32.00 per hour.
