Electrician – Full‑time, non‑exempt position

About the role
The Physical Plant Department at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is seeking a full‑time, non‑exempt Electrician. Under general supervision you will work at the journey level to install, maintain, and repair electrical systems and equipment throughout the campus.
Key responsibilities
- Install, diagnose, and repair electrical circuits, apparatus, and components of industrial machinery in compliance with code, manuals, schematics, and blueprints.
- Read and interpret construction plans and recommend modifications when necessary.
- Connect and repair power supply wiring for machines, lighting fixtures, conduit, switches, motors, generators, and climate‑control systems.
- Perform routine maintenance on fluorescent and incandescent lighting, wiring, conduit boxes, and related equipment; prepare time, labor, and material estimates.
- Prepare daily operation reports, maintain electrical tools and testing equipment, and clean work areas after projects.
- Provide guidance and training to other maintenance staff and lead special projects as assigned.
Required profile
- Journey‑level experience with electrical systems operating below 13,000 volts.
- Strong knowledge of basic mathematics for calculations involving area, volume, percentages, and ratios.
- Familiarity with OSHA regulations and applicable electrical codes and Underwriters Laboratories standards.
- Ability to read and work from technical drawings, schematics, and specifications.
Required skills
- Electrical systems installation and troubleshooting.
- Electrical code compliance.
- Use of testing equipment such as ohmmeters and oscilloscopes.
- Maintenance of lighting, motor, and control equipment.
