Electrical Engineer (Digital), All Levels

About the role

Impulse Space is hiring an Electrical Engineer (Digital) in Redondo Beach, California, to own the architecture, design and bring-up of custom digital circuit boards for software-defined radios. The engineer works with RF, RF software and mechanical engineers to meet test needs across a wide range of capabilities, including uplink and downlink software-defined radios using FPGAs, memory interfaces, high-speed digital peripherals and analog-to-digital converters. Leveling is commensurate with experience.

Key responsibilities

• Design and bring up high-speed digital systems supporting software-defined radios
• Contribute to new spacecraft RF architecture trades
• Develop circuit boards (schematic and layout) for spacecraft, with an emphasis on digital electronics
• Perform rigorous analyses and simulations of digital devices and systems
• Perform development testing of hardware in the lab, from single digital designs to entire RF systems
• Derive digital hardware design requirements from system-level specifications
• Own hardware through qualification and flight operations
• Mentor less experienced engineers and improve existing products through troubleshooting, failure analysis and implementation of improvements

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
• 5+ years of professional experience designing digital electronics
• Experience troubleshooting electronics problems at the board or system level
• Ability to communicate technical challenges, explain rationale and resolve concerns
• U.S. person or eligible to obtain an export license, due to ITAR and EAR restrictions

Required skills

• Proficiency with component selection, analysis, simulation, schematics and layout
• Knowledge of digital circuit design concepts such as signal integrity and timing
• Familiarity with high-speed digital simulation software such as HyperLynx, Sigrity, SiWave or ADS
• Preferred: 5+ years with Altium Designer, EM simulation tools (ADS, HFSS, CST, Genesys), large BGA layouts, radiation-tolerant digital design, RF protocols (SRS4, DVBS-II, CCSDS), multi-gigabit SERDES, DDR4/5, PCIe, RGMII/SGMII, Ethernet, and startup/agile environments

What we offer

• Salary range of $145,000 to $240,000 per year, depending on role, level, location and skills
