Director of Finance

About the role

SCB, an award‑winning architecture, planning, interior design and urban design firm, is seeking a Director of Finance to lead its finance and accounting function from the Chicago headquarters. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, you will act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, translating financial data into actionable insight.

Key responsibilities

• Partner with the COO, CEO, Principals, Studio Leaders and Department Heads to turn financial information into strategic recommendations.
• Own the integrity, accuracy and timeliness of all financial reporting, including month‑end close, management reports, forecasts, variance analysis and year‑end activities.
• Lead an experienced finance team responsible for day‑to‑day operations such as billing, collections, budgeting and cash management.
• Analyze firm‑wide performance metrics—project profitability, backlog, utilization, staffing trends—and communicate risks and opportunities.
• Ensure compliance with accounting standards and internal controls.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading finance functions in professional services or design‑focused organizations.
• Strong business acumen with the ability to influence senior leaders.
• Demonstrated track record of building and developing high‑performing finance teams.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
