Director of Communications

About the role

Umbra is seeking a strategic Director of Communications to lead both internal and external messaging for its space‑technology business. Reporting to the VP of Communications and based in Arlington, VA, the role will shape how the company’s story is told to employees, customers, media, policymakers and the public.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute day‑to‑day media relations strategy, serving as the primary point of contact for journalists across national, trade, defense, space and technology outlets.
• Craft and edit press releases, statements, speeches, op‑eds, executive briefings and other external communications.
• Coordinate media interviews, public speaking engagements and panel appearances for senior leaders, providing briefing materials and coaching.
• Lead internal communications, executive messaging and major company announcements, including product launches, partnership agreements and contract awards.
• Monitor the media landscape and external environment to identify opportunities and risks, working closely with legal, business units and other stakeholders.
• Advise senior leadership on reputation management and crisis communications.

Required profile

• 10+ years of progressive communications experience, preferably in high‑tech, aerospace or defense sectors.
• Proven track record of securing media coverage and managing press relations at a national level.
• Exceptional writing and storytelling ability, with experience translating complex technical concepts into clear narratives.
• Strong news judgment and ability to operate strategically while delivering rapid execution.
• Experience advising senior executives and preparing them for high‑visibility media interactions.
