About the role

The Department of Music at Carleton College seeks a full‑time, tenure‑track Assistant Professor to serve as the Director of the Carleton Orchestra. The appointment begins September 1, 2027 and focuses on leading the undergraduate orchestra while contributing to the department’s teaching mission.

Key responsibilities

• Direct and conduct the Carleton Orchestra each term.
• Develop and implement a vision for instrumental ensembles within a liberal‑arts context.
• Teach applied instruction, orchestration, composition, and performance‑practice courses as needed.
• Oversee secondary ensemble activities such as contemporary music ensembles or chamber groups.
• Collaborate with department faculty on curriculum development and student mentorship.

Required profile

• Doctoral degree in instrumental conducting (or ABD status considered) by September 1, 2027.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching and performance.
• Strong communication and organizational abilities.
