Director, Engineering

About the role

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) seeks a seasoned Director of Engineering to lead its Road Improvement Program and Subdivision Street Developments. This senior leader will oversee a diverse engineering department of roughly 65 full‑time staff across design, construction, subdivision improvement, right‑of‑way, and programming divisions.

Key responsibilities

• Manage all county road, bridge and infrastructure projects as directed by senior leadership.
• Communicate effectively with elected officials, community leaders, private organizations and the public.
• Develop and administer the annual departmental budget and three‑year financial plan.
• Enforce board policies, departmental procedures and safety standards.
• Ensure compliance with state, federal and local regulations.
• Report project performance to the Managing Director and Board.
• Lead staff meetings, serve on committees and mentor engineering talent.
• Maintain labor relations and represent the department in grievance or arbitration matters.
• Stay current with transportation safety, materials and traffic flow techniques through professional development.
• Respond to road and project emergencies as needed.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university.
• Minimum 10 years of full‑time civil engineering experience.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in Michigan.
