Development Intern – Fundraising & Communications

About the role

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in New York & New Jersey is seeking a Development Intern to support its fundraising and communications efforts. This unpaid position offers hands‑on experience in storytelling, donor outreach, and event coordination within a leading humanitarian organization.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and update the story catalog with client stories and case studies aligned with the Development Storytelling Strategy.
• Collaborate with program departments to curate compelling narratives for donor communications.
• Develop assets for fundraising campaigns, including annual reports, welcome packets, and one‑page briefs.
• Assist with event logistics: track RSVPs, support planning, briefing, day‑of execution, and post‑event follow‑up.
• Support prospecting activities targeting individuals, foundations, and corporations.
• Prepare deliverable sheets and maintain grant tracking spreadsheets.
• Perform bi‑weekly in‑person administrative tasks at the New York City office.

Required profile

• Enrolled in a relevant undergraduate or graduate program (e.g., nonprofit management, communications, international affairs).
• Strong interest in humanitarian work and fundraising.
• Excellent written communication and storytelling abilities.
• Detail‑oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or equivalent productivity tools.
• Basic understanding of donor communications and fundraising principles.
