Designer 3 – Ship Design Engineer

About the role

Ingalls Shipbuilding is seeking a Designer 3 to create and refine components for naval vessels. The role combines hands‑on design work with close collaboration across engineering, manufacturing and planning teams to ensure designs are manufacturable and meet contractual specifications.

Key responsibilities

• Develop new component designs and modify existing ones using CAD/CAM tools.
• Produce rough layouts, sketches and detailed drawings to communicate design proposals.
• Coordinate design criteria with engineering, tooling, material and production groups, focusing on ease of manufacture and material availability.
• Perform calculations, studies and feasibility analyses to support design decisions.
• Review and verify design outputs, ensuring compliance with specifications and standards.

Required profile

• High School Diploma/GED with 7 years of relevant experience, or an Associate’s degree (or equivalent 2‑year technical degree) with 3 years of experience.
• Additional 5 years of design experience preferred.
• Ability to develop manufacturing aids from 2‑D drawings or ShipConstructor models.

Required skills

• Proficiency with CAD, CAM and CATIA.
• Experience using Microsoft Office, Ship Constructor and AutoCAD.
• Strong ability to check and validate design products.
