Design Engineer – Roller Cone

About the role

Varel Energy Solutions is seeking a Design Engineer to lead the design, development, and optimisation of roller‑cone rock bits at our Kingwood, Texas facility. You will create innovative solutions that enhance drilling performance and deliver financial value for our customers.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse customer and operational requirements to define engineering solutions.
• Develop conceptual designs and new roller‑cone products.
• Coordinate prototype manufacturing and monitor product performance.
• Investigate quality and performance issues, perform root‑cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
• Provide technical support to sales, operations, and field services.
• Prepare and maintain technical data packs, reports, bulletins, and engineering documentation.
• Collaborate with manufacturing, sales, field services, and end‑users, including on‑site visits.
• Ensure designs meet fit, form, function, and manufacturability criteria.

Required profile

• 2‑4 years of experience in roller‑cone bit design or related applications (5‑10 years acceptable).
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field.
• Strong understanding of the full design process from concept to release.
• Knowledge of material concepts, especially steel alloys and composite materials.

Required skills

• CAD modeling (creation of 3D models and drawings).
• Bill of Materials (BOM) management.
• Root‑cause analysis and corrective‑action implementation.
• Material selection for steel alloys and composites.
• Technical documentation and engineering database maintenance.
