Design Engineer – Mechanical Design

About the role

Chart Industries is seeking a Design Engineer to join its Howden division in Windsor, CT. You will apply mechanical design expertise to develop and improve industrial pressure and vacuum systems used in air and gas handling applications.

Key responsibilities

• Create complex layouts, system designs, and detailed 3‑D models for industrial pressure and vacuum equipment.
• Interpret customer drawings and specifications to produce manufacturable designs.
• Develop new components or redesign existing ones, producing complete design, layout, and detail drawings.
• Specify tolerances, finishes, dimensions, and other manufacturing data using company software.
• Generate bills of material and procurement specifications via the ERP system.
• Perform DFMA analyses and update legacy designs to modern standards.
• Support other departments by clarifying drawings, specifications, and resolving technical issues.
• Participate in engineering projects, studies, and reporting.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or a Drafting Certificate with equivalent experience.
• Minimum 5 years of solid‑modeling experience (preferably Autodesk Inventor) and related database tools.
• Proficiency with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (ASME Y14.5).
• Experience interpreting customer/vendor prints and creating manufacturing drawings.
• Knowledge of drafting standards, global engineering standards, and sheet‑metal or machined‑part design.
• Familiarity with welding processes and symbols.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and ERP systems.
