About the role
Join 3M's Abrasive Systems Division R&D lab as a Data Science Specialist. You will work alongside materials scientists, formulators, and process engineers to drive innovative abrasive products through data‑driven experimentation and modeling.
Key responsibilities
- Apply machine learning and statistical modeling to materials R&D, partnering on design of experiments (DOE), analysis, and interpretation.
- Build predictive models that influence product and process decisions, and contribute to vision‑system and LLM‑enabled R&D tools.
- Coach the R&D team on statistical thinking, DOE, measurement‑system practice, and practical ML integration.
- Shape division‑level data science strategy and help define the technical roadmap.
- Strengthen measurement‑system practices across the lab to improve experimental quality and decision confidence.
- Collaborate with 3M’s broader material and data‑science communities to introduce relevant methods, tools, and cloud/AI capabilities.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in a quantitative or engineering discipline (e.g., statistics, applied math, computer science, data science, physics, engineering).
- Minimum five years of applied data‑science experience in R&D, materials, process, or manufacturing environments.
- Experience in private, public, government, or military sectors is acceptable.
