Data Scientist – New College Graduate (Austin, TX)

About the role

Applied Materials is a global leader in materials science and engineering, providing essential equipment for semiconductor and display manufacturing. The Logistics Data Management organization seeks a new‑college graduate to join the Logistics Data Repository team, building data pipelines that support analytics, AI initiatives, and business decision‑making for supply‑chain operations in Austin, TX.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines using Python, SQL, PySpark, and modern data‑engineering frameworks.
• Build, test, and optimise data pipelines and analytics‑ready datasets on cloud platforms.
• Perform data analysis and exploratory investigations to uncover trends, anomalies, and insights.
• Support reporting, analytics, and machine‑learning initiatives by preparing high‑quality data.
• Collaborate with data engineers, data scientists, and business stakeholders to solve complex problems.
• Assist with AI‑driven automation projects and identify opportunities for AI improvements.
• Monitor data quality, troubleshoot issues, and provide operational support.
• Participate in design discussions, code reviews, and continuous‑improvement activities.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or related field (GPA ≥ 3.0 preferred).
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, communication, and teamwork abilities.
• Passion for working with data and emerging technologies.

Required skills

• Python and SQL programming.
• Experience with PySpark or Apache Spark.
• Understanding of data‑engineering, ETL/ELT, and data‑warehousing concepts.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
• Knowledge of tools like Databricks, Airflow, Pandas, and NumPy.
• Exposure to data‑visualisation tools (Power BI, Tableau) and generative AI concepts.

What we offer

• Salary range $80,000 – $110,000 per year.
• Location in Austin, TX with occasional travel (≈10%).
