Custodian (Level 1 or 2) – Residential Services

About the role

The Custodian 1 or 2 position supports LSU’s Residential Life by maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming environments across more than 1.9 million square feet of residence halls and apartments. The role involves regular interaction with students, staff, and the public while ensuring high‑standard housekeeping and facility upkeep.

Key responsibilities

• Clean lobbies, bathrooms, hallways and assigned areas by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting and polishing (≈30%).
• Empty trash and recycling containers, handle bio‑hazardous waste, and decontaminate waste bins (≈20%).
• Strip, wax and polish floors using industrial mops and commercial floor machines (≈10%).
• Operate wet/dry vacuums, carpet extraction equipment and flood pumps for water removal (≈10%).
• Power‑wash building exteriors, windows, walls, steps and sidewalks (≈10%).
• Unlock and lock campus buildings, manage assigned keys and ensure building security (≈10%).
• Set up tables, chairs and partitions for special events and relocate office furniture as needed.

Required profile

• Ability to work in areas requiring a higher degree of knowledge and skill.
• Comfort handling hazardous cleaning materials and following safety protocols.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently in a fast‑paced environment.
• Reliability in managing key security and responding to emergency situations such as floods.

Required skills

• Operating commercial floor stripping, waxing and polishing equipment.
• Using wet/dry vacuums, carpet extraction machines and flood pumps.
• Power‑washing building exteriors and windows.
• Mixing and applying cleaning solutions at correct concentrations.
• Key management and basic building security procedures.
