Custodian (Level 1 or 2)

About the role

The Custodian (Level 1 or 2) works as part of a custodial crew for LSU Residential Life, maintaining more than 1.9 million square feet of residence halls and apartments that house over 5,000 students. The role involves frequent interaction with students, staff and the public while ensuring clean, safe, and welcoming living environments.

Key responsibilities

• Clean lobbies, bathrooms, hallways and assigned areas by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting and polishing.
• Empty trash and recycling containers, handle bio‑hazardous waste and decontaminate containers.
• Strip, wax, seal and polish floors using industrial‑size mops and commercial floor machines.
• Operate wet/dry vacuums, carpet extraction equipment, flood pumps and other commercial cleaning tools.
• Power‑wash building exteriors, windows, walls, steps and sidewalks.
• Unlock and lock campus buildings, manage assigned keys and ensure their security.
• Set up tables, chairs, partitions and signage for special events and rearrange office furniture as needed.

Required profile

• Comfortable with high levels of public contact and interaction.
• Ability to work safely with hazardous or bio‑hazardous materials.
• Strong visual inspection skills for recycling compliance.
• Physical stamina to perform repetitive cleaning tasks and lift equipment.
• Reliability and punctuality for shift coverage.

Required skills

• Operation of wet/dry vacuum equipment.
• Carpet extraction and floor stripping/waxing techniques.
• Use of power washers and commercial window‑cleaning tools.
• Mixing and diluting cleaning solutions to correct concentrations.
• Key handling and basic security procedures.
• Basic knowledge of hazardous material handling protocols.
