Custodian - 92nd Street ASPCA

About the role

The Custodian works at the ASPCA's 92nd Street location in Manhattan, reporting to the Senior Facilities Manager. The role covers general building maintenance and daily cleaning on a day, evening or overnight shift, keeping the facilities clean and orderly for animals, staff, volunteers and visitors. It is an on-site position, Wednesday to Sunday from 3:30pm to 11:30pm.

Key responsibilities

• Clean and maintain restrooms, locker rooms, offices, workstations and medical areas, including disinfection and sanitizing
• Maintain flooring: sweep, mop, vacuum, strip, buff, seal and shampoo carpets
• Clean windows, mirrors, glass partitions, tile, Corian concrete and terrazzo, and clean roof drains, gutters and the exterior sidewalk, curb and ramp
• Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways and parking areas, and clean company vehicles
• Replenish supplies, replace light bulbs, move trash and recycling, set up rooms for meetings and events, and help with minor repairs such as painting, caulking and unclogging drains
• Operate cleaning equipment including floor machines, wet/dry vacuums, upholstery shampooer, pressure washer and snow thrower
• Aid the Senior Custodian and foremen, check for unlocked doors and windows, transport supplies off site, and assist with work orders
• Provide coverage at other ASPCA New York locations and work overtime when required
• Help with safety and security testing and drills, fire safety team duties, and onboarding of new employees

Required profile

• High school diploma, GED equivalent or equivalent work experience
• Previous experience in all phases of housekeeping preferred
• Physical ability to lift at least 50 lbs, stand for long periods, bend and climb stairs and ladders
• English required; Spanish also mentioned
• Valid NY driver's license and ability to drive when necessary preferred
• Reliable, able to follow directions and work as a team member

Required skills

• Basic computer skills
• Strong written, verbal and listening communication skills
• Preferred: skilled use of buffer and extractor tools
