Counsel I – Litigation

About the role

The Counsel I – Litigation will manage disputes, advise business stakeholders, and represent Sprouts in litigation and administrative proceedings. Working both independently and under supervision, the attorney will partner with internal teams and outside counsel to develop effective legal strategies aligned with business objectives.

Key responsibilities

• Lead fact investigations, discovery, and document management, including subpoenas and production.
• Analyze claims, develop litigation and early‑resolution strategies, and draft pleadings, motions, briefs, and legal correspondence.
• Appear as counsel in administrative hearings such as wage claim proceedings.
• Advise internal leaders on legal risk, claim exposure, and dispute‑avoidance tactics.
• Manage outside counsel relationships, align strategies, control costs, and oversee defense tenders and indemnification claims.
• Prepare witnesses for depositions, hearings, and interviews.
• Monitor litigation trends, manage holds and records retention, and track legal spend to identify efficiencies.
• Collaborate with internal legal teams on broader dispute‑resolution initiatives and build strong cross‑functional relationships.

Required profile

• Juris Doctor from an ABA‑accredited law school and active bar membership.
• Minimum 2 + years of civil litigation experience in a law firm or in‑house setting.
• Experience with California‑specific litigation (e.g., PAGA, Proposition 65) preferred.
