Controls System Technician

About the role

We are seeking a detail‑oriented Controls System Technician to install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair automated control systems and instrumentation at our New Orleans facility. You will work closely with engineers and operations staff to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable maritime production processes.

Key responsibilities

• Install, calibrate and commission sensors, transmitters, valves, actuators and controllers.
• Perform preventive maintenance on PLCs, HMIs, VFDs and related field devices.
• Troubleshoot electrical, pneumatic and control system faults using schematics, ladder logic and diagnostic tools.
• Assist engineers with system upgrades, modifications and start‑up activities.
• Monitor and maintain SCADA/HMI systems, report anomalies and execute basic configuration changes.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, loop diagrams and technical manuals.
• Document maintenance actions, equipment history and calibration records in the CMMS.
• Maintain instrument calibration traceability and follow safety procedures including LOTO, arc‑flash and confined‑space protocols.
• Coordinate with operations to minimise process disruptions and support reliability improvement and root‑cause analysis initiatives.

Required profile

• Associate degree or technical diploma in Instrumentation, Electrical Technology, Electronics or equivalent military/vocational training.
• At least 2 years of hands‑on experience in industrial instrumentation and controls maintenance.
• Working knowledge of PLC platforms (Allen‑Bradley, Siemens) and ability to navigate ladder logic.
• Experience with instrumentation calibration tools and procedures.
• Solid understanding of 4‑20 mA loops, HART communication and discrete wiring.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, P&IDs and loop sheets.
• Familiarity with industrial safety practices such as LOTO and NFPA 70E.

• PLC programming (Allen‑Bradley, Siemens) and ladder logic.
• HMI and SCADA system operation.
• Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) maintenance.
• Instrumentation calibration and 4‑20 mA loop testing.
• HART communication protocol.
• Electrical schematics, P&IDs and loop diagram interpretation.
• CMMS usage (e.g., SAP PM, Maximo, Infor).
• Industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Profibus, EtherNet/IP).
• Safety procedures: LOTO, arc‑flash, confined‑space compliance.
