Controller – Financial Services

About the role

Our client, a leading financial services firm in New York City, is looking for a seasoned Controller to lead the accounting function. The role will oversee the full accounting cycle, ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP, and act as a trusted partner to senior leadership.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close.
• Oversee general ledger activity, accruals, intercompany transactions, leases, fixed assets, payroll, and compensation‑related accounting.
• Review journal entries, reconciliations, financial analyses, and supporting schedules.
• Prepare and review internal and external financial statements.
• Coordinate annual audits and manage relationships with external service providers.
• Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and internal accounting policies.
• Research and resolve technical accounting matters.
• Maintain and enhance internal controls, policies, procedures, and documentation.
• Partner with finance, tax, legal, technology, and other internal teams on company‑wide initiatives.
• Improve accounting processes through standardization, automation, and technology.
• Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team.
• Serve as a trusted accounting resource to senior management.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
• Active CPA license.
• 15+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership and people‑management responsibilities.
• Experience within a complex, multi‑entity organization.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, technical accounting, and internal controls.
• Proven experience managing financial statement audits.
• Advanced analytical, organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
• Ability to remain hands‑on while overseeing broader accounting operations.

Required skills

• Advanced Excel proficiency.
• Experience with accounting systems.
