Controller – Finance Team Leader

About the role

The Controller is a senior member of the finance team, responsible for day‑to‑day accounting operations, reporting to the CFO/CAO, and leading a team of four accounting professionals. The role ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial records, oversees monthly and year‑end close, and supports strategic decision‑making across the organization.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee core accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger maintenance.
• Lead the monthly and year‑end close processes, ensuring accurate journal entries and timely reconciliations.
• Prepare internal financial statements, budget variance analyses, and management reports.
• Ensure compliance with nonprofit GAAP, FASB standards, and internal policies.
• Manage daily banking activities, cash management, and cash‑flow forecasting.
• Supervise collections, restricted‑activity accounting, and proper expense allocation.
• Lead the annual financial audit and 403(b) audit, serving as primary liaison with external auditors.
• Coordinate federal and state reporting requirements, including Forms 5500 and sales/excise tax returns.
• Maintain and improve internal controls, policies, and procedures.
• Support the annual budgeting process and provide financial analysis for strategic decisions.
• Directly supervise and develop a team of four accounting staff, setting expectations and fostering professional growth.
• Collaborate with department directors, acting as a knowledgeable finance resource.
