Community Organizer

About the role

Essie Justice Group is seeking a people‑oriented, adaptable Community Organizer to support day‑to‑day implementation of its organizing programs and campaigns. The role focuses on recruiting, engaging, and developing members—women and gender‑nonconforming people with incarcerated loved ones—into leadership positions.

Key responsibilities

• Recruit new members and steward participation of existing members in programs and campaign activities.
• Track member participation, turnout goals, and retention trends; suggest engagement strategies.
• Facilitate inclusive meetings, gatherings, and events aligned with Essie’s values of care, equity, and empowerment.
• Assist with campaign tactics such as press events, meetings with elected officials, canvassing, and phone banking.
• Provide logistical support for meetings and events, and help produce member‑ and partner‑facing materials.
• Maintain strong relationships with community allies and support staff in outreach efforts.

Required profile

• Deep belief in people power and passion for supporting leadership development of those impacted by the criminal legal system.
• Highly motivated, adaptable, and comfortable working in a fast‑growing nonprofit environment.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to learn members’ strengths, stories, and interests.
• Commitment to the values of care, equity, community safety, and liberation.
