Communications Specialist

About the role

The Georgetown University Police Department is seeking a Communications Specialist to serve as the primary point of contact for emergency and non‑emergency calls on both the Hilltop and Capitol campuses. This fast‑paced position supports campus safety by dispatching police and EMS, monitoring alarm and CCTV systems, and providing customer service to students, staff, and visitors.

Key responsibilities

• Answer emergency and non‑emergency telephone calls for service.
• Dispatch police officers and EMS personnel according to established protocols.
• Monitor the university fire alarm system and closed‑circuit television (CCTV) security feeds.
• Operate the public safety desk, providing information and assistance to callers and walk‑in visitors.
• Prioritize calls based on level of urgency while remaining calm and professional.
• Work rotating shifts that may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Required profile

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• At least 18 years of age.
• U.S. citizenship or authorized to work in the United States.
• Ability to handle stressful, time‑critical situations and multitask effectively.
• Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

Required skills

• NCIC (National Crime Information Center) certification.
• APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator certification.
• FEMA Incident Command certification.
• CPR certification.
