Communications Officer

About the role

The Department of Public Safety at Pepperdine University seeks a Communications Officer to staff its 24‑hour communication center. You will serve as the primary point of contact for radio, telephone, and CCTV operations, helping to maintain a safe and welcoming campus environment.

Key responsibilities

• Operate radio, telephone, and CCTV systems, monitoring alarms, electronic communications, and controlled‑access entrances.
• Dispatch public safety, fire, medical, and parking personnel based on priority, location, and resource availability.
• Accurately track and document officer activities, differentiate emergency from non‑emergency calls, and prioritize service requests.
• Enter detailed records for all calls into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
• Provide courteous customer service by phone or at the reception center, fostering positive community relations.
• Support Public Safety staff and campus members to promote a professional and efficient work environment.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by Public Safety leadership.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Class C California driver’s license with a good driving record.
• CPR and basic first‑aid certification (obtainable within 90 days of hire).
• Ability to type at least 40 words per minute.
• Calm demeanor in emergency situations and strong judgment.
• Willingness to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours on short notice.
