Communications Manager – Strategic Narrative & Campaigns

About the role

Essie Justice Group is seeking a strategic Communications Manager to shape and amplify its Black feminist, abolitionist narrative. The role will lead storytelling, content creation, and digital campaigns that advance the organization’s decarceration agenda and support its growing membership of women with incarcerated loved ones.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and steward messaging that elevates Essie’s brand, political perspective, and justice focus.
• Manage a small communications team (1–2 staff) responsible for content and digital strategy.
• Design and execute content, social media, and digital strategies across all platforms.
• Oversee production and distribution of print and electronic publications, including emails, program collateral, and donor outreach materials.
• Coordinate visual assets and external creative contractors such as graphic designers, photographers, and videographers.
• Conceptualize and manage the creation of Essie‑branded merchandise and swag.

Required profile

• Strategic thinker with a strong storytelling instinct and ability to spot narrative opportunities.
• Creative, versatile, and comfortable moving between precise messaging and compelling visual content.
• Deep awareness of emerging cultural trends, mainstream media moments, and movement dynamics.
• Passion for racial and gender justice, abolitionist politics, and community‑centered advocacy.
