Communications Lead

About the role

The University of Maryland’s Division of Information Technology is seeking a Communications Lead to join the Elevate team. This role will translate complex technical and project information into clear, audience‑specific messaging for the broader university community.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, approve, and deliver a comprehensive communications plan for Elevate initiatives.
• Supervise the Communications Specialist and ensure consistent messaging across all channels.
• Distill functional, technical, and project‑related details into accessible content for diverse stakeholders.
• Coordinate with communication liaisons at each school or college to create templates and ready‑to‑use content.
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of communications efforts and adjust strategies as needed.
• Travel across campus for meetings and ensure timely distribution of information.
• Support essential operations during emergencies, including work outside normal hours.

Required profile

• Prior experience in a higher‑education environment (institutional, consulting, or system implementation) is strongly preferred.
• Exceptional writing, storytelling, and strategic communication abilities.
• Proven skill in translating technical or process‑heavy information for broad audiences.
• Experience overseeing communication planning, messaging frameworks, and digital content management for large‑scale technology or transformation projects.
• Collaborative, detail‑oriented, and able to thrive in fast‑moving environments.
• Willingness to work evenings, nights, weekends, or varied shifts as required.
