Commissioning Assistant Engineer – Autonomous Vessel

About the role

Support the Chief Engineer in commissioning and operating the engine room and associated machinery aboard a novel autonomous vessel. Ensure marine systems such as propulsion, auxiliary machinery, fuel, lubrication, cooling, and environmental equipment are tested, validated, and integrated with the vessel’s autonomy and software control systems for reliable manned, remote, and autonomous operation.

Key responsibilities

• Support commissioning activities for autonomous vessels, including system testing, validation, and troubleshooting.
• Work with autonomy and software engineering teams to verify integration of machinery control systems with the vessel’s autonomy stack.
• Develop and refine standard operating procedures, checklists, and technical documentation from scratch.
• Perform assigned maintenance on vessel machinery under the Chief Engineer’s direction and be on‑call while on‑hitch.

Required profile

• Valid U.S. Coast Guard MMC and appropriate engineering endorsements (Assistant Engineer or Designated Duty Engineer, Unlimited HP).
• STCW endorsements including Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch, Basic Training, Advanced Firefighting.
• Valid USCG STCW medical certificate, TWIC and passport.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a small, dynamic team with a strong safety focus.

Required skills

• Working knowledge of maritime engineering systems, especially electrical systems.
• Familiarity with jet‑drive marine engines (desired).
• Experience with autonomous or unmanned systems, software engineering, and automation systems (desired).
