Claims Attorney – Litigation & Settlement

About the role

The Claims Attorney will evaluate and manage insurance claims, conducting investigations, analyzing coverage, and negotiating settlements. This position focuses on Miscellaneous Medical Professional Liability and Social Services Professional Liability policies, while also handling other specialty liability products.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee the entire litigation process for claims to minimize company risk.
• Analyze coverage issues, conduct investigations, and assess the validity of moderately complex claims.
• Prepare and draft legal correspondence to parties via mail, fax, or electronic means.
• Maintain and update physical and electronic claim files.
• Communicate claim status, information requests, and payment decisions to agents, principals, claimants, and attorneys.
• Attend court hearings, mediations, settlement conferences, and trials as needed.
• Assign claims to outside counsel, manage the process, ensure policy compliance, and approve billing.
• Negotiate claim settlements within defined limits and seek approval for larger amounts.
• Conduct legal research and handle miscellaneous legal matters.

Required profile

• Limited experience in claims handling or insurance litigation.
• Ability to evaluate moderately complex liability claims.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for interacting with diverse stakeholders.
• Comfort with managing external counsel and adhering to company policies.
• Detail‑oriented approach to maintaining accurate claim documentation.
