Certified Grounds Maintenance / Custodian

About the role

Carleton College is seeking a Certified Grounds Maintenance/Custodian to perform seasonal grounds upkeep and year‑round custodial services on its 1,000‑acre campus. The position works Monday‑Friday with varying hours depending on the season and may shift between grounds and custodial duties as needed.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and improve campus grounds, including turf, landscape plantings, walks, roads, athletic fields, and seasonal snow removal.
• Perform interior custodial tasks such as cleaning lavatories, lockers, kitchens, vacuuming, trash removal, and light fixture maintenance.
• Repair, troubleshoot, and conduct preventative maintenance on grounds equipment and custodial tools.
• Lock and unlock doors, manage inventory, order supplies, and assist in training student employees.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum 500 hours of green‑industry experience and two approved industry certifications.
• Physical ability to lift 50 lb repeatedly and meet pre‑employment physical, background, and driver‑license requirements.

Required skills

• MNLA Certified Professional.
• MDA Pesticide Applicator Licenses (Category A, E & P, Category F aquatics).
• Certified Irrigation Technician.
• DNR Certified Tree Inspector.
• ISA Certified Arborist.
• Operation and maintenance of motorized hand tools and riding equipment.
