Cemetery Technician 1

About the role

The State of Georgia is seeking a Cemetery Technician 1 to support the maintenance and operation of cemetery grounds in Milledgeville. This full‑time position involves hands‑on work to ensure gravesites are prepared, maintained, and presented respectfully for families and visitors.

Key responsibilities

• Excavate and backfill graves to required dimensions using hand tools and light equipment.
• Prepare and stage gravesites for burial services.
• Operate and maintain grounds‑keeping equipment such as mowers, trimmers, and leaf blowers.
• Perform general landscaping duties including mowing, weeding, planting, and pruning.
• Clean and maintain cemetery structures, facilities, and equipment.
• Assist with placement and removal of headstones and markers.
• Follow safety protocols and maintain a professional demeanor with bereaved families.
• Support seasonal tasks such as snow removal when needed.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• At least six months of general labor experience.
• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
• Ability to perform strenuous physical labor in various weather conditions.
• Capacity to lift and carry objects up to 75 lb.
• Sensitivity and respect for deceased individuals and their families.

Required skills

• Operation of mowers, trimmers, and leaf blowers.
• Use of hand tools for excavation and backfilling.
• Basic grounds‑keeping equipment knowledge.
