Cash Operations Specialist I

About the role

The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago is seeking an entry‑level Cash Operations Specialist I to join its Cash Services team. In this position you will handle currency in a highly regulated environment, ensuring accuracy, security, and compliance with federal guidelines.

Key responsibilities

• Receive, process, pay out, destroy, and validate currency following the Federal Reserve Currency Operations Manual and internal procedures.
• Operate high‑speed currency equipment and material handling devices while meeting production standards.
• Balance deposits, record entries, and manage inventory using specialized accounting and cash‑services applications.
• Transfer and store large volumes of currency and coin, maintaining custody and accountability throughout the process.
• Identify and report control or procedural exceptions to management.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to stand for most of the shift and lift up to 50 lb, with occasional handling of containers up to 1,500 lb.
• Willingness to work a fixed shift (5:40 am‑2:50 pm or 6:00 am‑3:15 pm, Monday‑Friday).
• Capability to obtain and maintain counterfeit detection certification.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Experience using automated information‑technology systems.
• Operation of high‑speed currency processing equipment.
• Operation of material handling equipment as required by OSHA.
• Familiarity with accounting operating systems and inventory tracking applications.
